Work Pick ~ Black Sheath Dress

Banana Republic is having a great sale – 30% through 8/28.  Use code BRFASHION for the deal.

My pick from Banana’s sale is the below lightweight wool cowl-neck sheath - a classic work dress that will take you easily from summer into fall.  Even though I have a closet full of basic black dresses, I feel like I could always use a few more.  This style of dress is a great go-to when I can’t figure out what to wear in the morning and is incredibly versatile.  This dress could easily be paired with bold accessories (for instance earrings or a bracelet) to take you from day to night or worn with pearls for a more classic, understated look.  This dress is originally priced at $150.  However, with the 30% discount, the price is reduced to around $105.  The dress comes in regular, petite and tall sizes and most of the sizes are (currently) in stock.

Work Pick ~ Academy Blazer

Gap sale ends today! Use code GAPLIST for 25% off.

Another great pick from the Gap sale that I’ve had my eye on is this Ponte Academy Blazer, pictured below.   The blazer comes in in regular, petite and tall sizes and in five colors - fuchsia, dark heather gray, navy, black and light heather gray.   (Yay for Gap for offering the full color palette in extended sizes!)  Originally priced at $88.00, after the discount it’s about $66.00.  Although the blazer is 77% polyester, it’s been highly rated – receiving 4.5 stars (out of 5 stars) –  and is extremely versatile.  Like many blazers, I could easily see this one paired with a shift dress at the office or worn with jeans, heels and a tank for a dinner out with friends.

Also, as we’re sadly nearing the end of summer, this is a great item that will transition easily into fall as the weather cools down (and as many offices revert to a business dress code).

Work Pick ~ Polka Dots

Gap is having a great sale – 30% off today and tomorrow; 25% off Wednesday and Thursday.  Use code GAPLIST for the deal.

One great item is the below Perfect Dot Shirt, which is a spin on the classic button down shirt featured last week.   It comes in regular, petite and tall sizes and is listed at $49.50.   With the 30% discount, the price is reduced to around $34.65!  There are two color options - a “pink dot” (which appears to be more of a purplish-pink) and a “blue dot.”  The shirt has long sleeves which are rolled up in the picture below.

For those of us who can’t get enough of polka dots, this shirt is a great, work-friendly way to incorporate the trend in office attire.

Statement Necklaces ~ A Petite Do or Don’t?

I recently added a few statement necklaces from BaubleBar to my collection, including the Orange Mosaic Bib pictured above.   In light of this purchase, the question posed to The Petite Edition is:

Are statement necklaces acceptable at the office and are they too big for those of us who are petite?

My general assessment:

  • Statement necklaces may be worn to the office provided they are on the smaller, less glitzy side. Take for instance the below necklaces, which I have worn to the office on numerous occasions.  (The usual caveats apply: bear in mind your office dress code; look to supervisors for guidance; and it’s probably not a good idea to be trendy at a new client pitch, unless you’re in advertising, retail or a profession more fashion oriented than finance, law, etc.)  In contrast, I would not wear the white necklace pictured at the bottom to the office.  The rule?  The greater the embellishment, the less office-friendly.

Pictured above:  J.Crew Tessallate necklace (sold out online but available through several eBay sellers, with similar versions on Etsy); Banana Republic pearls (old, see similar versions here and here).
